2004, K-9 Unit Training - Tetan relaxes by his water bowl before embarking on an aged track in a regular TSAR training.

Water and rest for the dog are an important responsibility for the handler. During evaluations, the handler is graded on how effectively he/she waters and rests the dog. The dog must be in peak focus to successfully work a search problem and continued hours of focus on the millions of scents the K-9 encounters and processes can be exhausting. The dog must also be able to rest and then effectively resume the work when the rest period is over.

7/4/2005, TSAR participates in the Arroyo Seco 4th of July Parade:
Handler, Loup Flores throws candy to eagerly awaiting children as K-9 Tetan leads her way along with other TSAR dogs from the K-9 Unit and horses from the Mounted Unit.

There is so much distraction and crowding in a parade situation, with lots of noise, people in various costumes and a variety of animals and vehicles all around. A search dog must remain calm and cool in all types of environments and a parade is a sure test of his/her temperment and nerves.

11/2005, Tracking/Trailing Training - Tetan's handler prepares him by putting on his search harness, just prior to running a wilderness track.

The ritual of putting on the harness is very important in search dog training. It lets the dog know that he is about to perform the specific task for which he has been trained and helps him focus and ready himslef both mentally and physically for the task.

11/2005, Tracking/Trailing Training - Loup and Tetan show the strong bond they have developed, which becomes extremely important when things get stressful or difficult on a real search mission. The bond will helpTetan continue to perform his duties and the trust he has for his handler may even save his or her life.

11/2005, Tracking/Trailing Training - Loup and Tetan take a little rest during a 2 1/2 mile track which has been aged for 22.5 hours.

Working a long track is very intense work for a dog. He has to pass through highly contaminated areas, areas where little or no track is left, scent that has blown off the track and into nearby vegetation confusing the track direction, and acute changes of direction in the track. A good rest is important, not so much because the body is tired, but because of the intense mental focus it takes to process the thousands of scents along the track and to disriminate and focus on the sole scent the dog is seeking, the specific scent of the subject.
